Act Three |
INT. INNER CHAMBER OF THE DRAGON'S CAVE In the dim light of the cavern, the DRAGON looms over Angel and Spike. Quickly, the two vampires dive under the discarded dragon skin, pulling it over every exposed inch of skin and clothing. The Dragon BLASTS THEM AGAIN, raking the entire left side of the cavern. WHITE-HOT FIRE pours over the dragon skin in furious waves. The second the fire stops flowing, Angel and Spike throw off the skin and rush to attack the Dragon before it can draw another breath. Spike swings his sword and severs the injured foot. The Dragon screams in pain, shattering several stalactites, which fall to the cave floor around it with an ECHOING CRASH. Blood flows freely from the foot. The Dragon lowers its head to directly blowtorch them. Spike swings for the Dragon's head and chops off an ear. Don't ruin the head! While the Dragon rears back in pain, Angel slits its belly wide open. Immediately both vampires are BLOWN INTO THE WATER as the gases inside the beast hit the oxygen in the air. They resurface, and Angel triumphantly rushes to the injured beast and CUTS OFF THE DRAGON'S HEAD. EXT. THE CAVE ENTRANCE - DAY TIME CUT to - Angel and Spike join THE WARRIORS AND ILLYRIA at the cave entrance. Are there any more raiders in the area? ILLYRIA None that live. I see you too have been successful. Angel holds up the head. The Wa!Jani crowd around the head to poke at it and ooh and ahh. CLOSE UP - Warrior Two notices the burn on Angel's hand as he shows off the head. He sucks in his breath in consternation and opens his knapsack. From it he takes a strip of cloth and the bundle of woody, shrub-like herbs topped with bluish-green buds. He looks at the stones near his feet and picks up two, one flat and one round. He sits on the ground. CLOSE-UP on the Wa!Jani's hands as he strips the buds from the herbs, places them on the flat stone and grinds them to an oily paste with the round stone. The entire group recoils as a FOUL AND ACRID ODOR IS RELEASED. Thank God I don't need to breathe. Warrior Two takes the head from Angel, who reluctantly releases it. He gives it to Warrior Three. Warrior Two then scoops up the paste with one hand and grabs Angel's wrist. Angel yanks it away. (hastily) You don't need to do that, it'll heal on its own. The warrior points to the burn, frowning fiercely and shaking his head. He rolls up the sleeve of his robe, showing a large patch of burned skin on his upper arm. It is healed, but the scars are red and puckered, much worse than a normal burn scar. Dragon fire. The extra nasty kind. What is it with fire on this world? Warrior Two smears the ointment on Angel's burn, then wraps it neatly with the cloth strip, splitting and knotting the ends. Warrior Three hands Angel back the head. Angel takes it with his good hand, admiring it once again. Warrior Three points to the head and back to the cave. He speaks, then looks expectantly at Angel. (holding his hands out as wide as he can) The dragon was this big! SPIKE (impatiently) Can we get back to camp? ANGEL (expansively, looking at the head) Sure. Just wait 'til Gunn sees this! WIDE SHOT - As they head back to the camp, we hear Angel's voice faint in the background, telling the stirring tale of their victory. He throws his arms out, imitating the dragon spreading its wings. Then he sucks in as much air as his chest can hold, blowing it out in imitation of the dragon. He takes out his sword and stabs the air. The Wa!Jani warriors jump out of range quickly, never taking their eyes off Angel. Even Illyria seems absorbed in the tale. Angel mimics being blown through the air. FADE TO - EXT. THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE WA!JANI CAMP - TWILIGHT Angel is finishing up another tale. The Wa!Jani warriors are laughing. Angel points to Spike and throws shadow punches, ending with a shadow knock-out. Then he points to himself, bending down and holding his palm out about two feet from the ground. And I was only this tall! The Wa!Jani laugh harder and slap him on the back. EXT. THE SHAMAN'S TENT - DUSK Angel, Spike, Illyria and the Wa!Jani approach the tent. The Shaman is waiting outside it, a ROLLED-UP WALLET OF LEATHER in one hand and a thick carved staff in the other. About six feet away (towards the desert, not the camp) is A PILE OF TIMBER AND KINDLING about two feet high, ready to be lit into a bonfire. Angel hands over the DRAGON'S HEAD to the Shaman. (casually) I want it back when you're done with it. The Shaman looks over the head, places it down on the sand before the unlit fire, and then unrolls the animal-skin pouch, filled with bundles of herbs, sticks, stones and powders, as well as some netsuke-like carved objects that are probably amulets. It looks very much like the contents of a 5-year-old's pockets, if you substituted Pokémon for the carvings. Need a light? Spike takes HIS LIGHTER out of his coat pocket. The Shaman watches closely as Spike snaps the flywheel and the lighter spits out its flame. The Shaman looks at the small flame, then turns to the fire and mutters a few words. It BURSTS INTO FLAME, nearly singeing his own eyebrows. He speaks to it sharply and it subsides a little. Guess not. The Shaman smiles at Spike as he pockets the lighter again. Then the Shaman sits down on the ground and composes himself to wait. The other Wa!Jani disperse to various tents or form small groups to describe their adventures. (Speaks Wa!Jani) GUNN He's waiting for the moons to rise. EXT. THE WA!JANI CAMP - NIGHT A BONFIRE AND THE TWIN MOONS, full and bright, illuminate the scene. Most of the tribesmen and women are settling down to watch the show. Some have brought snacks. Several children rush to sit in front, jostling each other for a better position. Angel, Spike, Illyria and Gunn stand close to the Shaman, watching. The Gang's weapons--the same ones they brought to the alley fight--are heaped in a small pile, visible in the light of the fire. THE WA!JANI HEALER stands next to Gunn, who translates what she is saying. (translating) In the beginning of time... Father Sun and Mother Fasach gave birth to twins. They lived with their mother in Verlaat, their holy city, and... visited us to teach our people everything they knew. They gave us the secret of communicating with fire and taming the beasts of the desert and mountains. When they were weary and ready to join their father in the sky, they chose two Wa!Jani children, twins, to take their place. They promised us that one day we too would join them in their city. Ever since then our shamans and healers have been twins, and have prayed to our protectors to help us find our way to Verlaat. ILLYRIA (To the Healer, interested despite herself) You speak with fire? HEALER (speaks at length) GUNN It was a gift of the gods to those possessed of mystical power. Illyria moves closer to the bonfire, picking up TWO STICKS, one of them AFLAME. She looks at them intensely, and the flame leaps from one stick to the other and back again. She does this several times; then the fire leaps onto the ground and RACES OVER TO WHERE SPIKE IS STANDING. The tongue of fire settles at the front of Spike's shoe, setting it on fire. (frantically smothering the fire with sand) Not funny, Blue! GUNN (smiling) I laughed. Illyria looks as innocent as a demon who has decimated entire world populations is physically capable of. Curious. The fire on your world is silent. It is nothing but a chain of chemical reactions created by the heat-induced decomposition of volatile gases and oxygen. Yet this fire speaks to me and obeys my commands. I am pleased. CUT to - The Shaman, who turns to face the assembled Wa!Jani, staff in hand. He RAISES HIS ARMS TO THE MOONS AND CHANTS loud enough for the others to hear. (translating) Givers of Life, Lords of Power, Lovers of Souls, Accept this sacrifice that we offer you. Fulfill your promise, honor our devotion. The crowd hums in response, a low sustained buzz. The Shaman places THE DRAGON'S SKULL on the fire. The fire does not affect it. He takes out a POWDER and sprinkles it on the flames, which turn from a bluish color to deep orange and red. Sprays of colored sparks shoot up from the fire, shimmering in the air before they flutter to the ground. The children applaud. Everything but the bones of the head burns away rapidly, flesh and sinew evaporating, leaving the skull, which is now GLOWING RED. After more chanting, A SPOT BETWEEN THE DRAGON'S EYES FLARES UP with a glowy CGI burst, then subsides again. The entire skull fades to white, leaving a SMALL RED GLOW from inside the skull. The Shaman removes the head from the fire with the staff, then places it gently on the sand. He then lifts his stick and suddenly brings it down on the skull, smashing into several large pieces. CLOSE-UP - Angel's anguished face. Ahhh! Spike laughs. (murmuring) Maybe he'll give you a shirt that says, "I fought a dragon and all I got was this lousy tee shirt." The Shaman plucks a GLOWING RED DRAGON'S STONE from the bone fragments. It is SMALL, about two centimeters in diameter, and almost PERFECTLY SPHERICAL. Then the Shaman takes out an INTRICATELY CARVED GLOBE from inside his robe. He holds the DRAGON'S STONE on one extended palm and the CARVED GLOBE in the other--two round talismans, one large, one small. He turns to face the crowd and chants the spell. Gunn translates for the others. Brother Moon, we call on thee. Sister Moon, we beseech thee. Your faithful and obedient kinsmen seek to be worthy to return home, seek to return to your loving care. Show us the way home, O wise and benevolent sister, O kind and generous brother. The crowd's humming grows louder. CLOSE-UP - The globe rises and floats two or three inches above the Shaman's palm. More red CGI flare traces a red line across the globe. The dragon's stone FADES TO BLACK. Many Wa!Jani crowd around the Shaman to exclaim over the carved globe, which is now ROTATING SLIGHTLY like a needle finding magnetic north. The others celebrate, cheering, shouting, and dancing for joy. The Shaman holds the globe high in the moonlight, then hands the globe to the Healer for safekeeping. When it leaves his hands IT NO LONGER FLOATS. The Shaman turns to Angel, Spike, Gunn, and the Healer. (confer very quietly) GUNN She asked him if he's strong enough to continue, but he said that the stone makes him stronger, more connected to the magic. ANGEL Then let's get started. It's time to go home. GUNN Angel, we could end up right when we left, in the middle of that demon horde. ANGEL There's no telling how much time has passed back home. We need to be ready for anything. The gang grabs THEIR WEAPONS, Gunn bending cautiously. The Shaman and the Healer talk quietly. They walk through the celebrating Wa!Jani. They walk up to a young Wa!Jani couple and speak briefly to the woman, who is pregnant. The Healer remains while the Shaman returns to Angel. The Shaman chants, HOLDING UP THE BLACK DRAGON'S STONE in the moons' light. The stone begins to GLOW RED again. THE SMOKE FROM THE FIRE GROWS AGITATED, flowing out over the ground. Then, suddenly, a PORTAL OPENS with the usual CGI swirly-ness. A strong wind rushes out of the portal. The crowd of onlookers protect their faces from the sand whipped up by the portal's opening. The gang look at each other, then back at the portal. Illyria strides through first, long hair whipping around her, followed by Spike and Angel and, more slowly, Gunn. The portal's winds whip the robes of the watching Wa!Jani, who call out farewells to the Shaman as he passes through the portal, still holding the dragon's stone. The portal closes behind him. EXT. THE ALLEY NORTH OF THE HYPERION - NIGHT Nearly the same spot where the Gang disappeared from. A faint glow in the sky over the buildings shows that daybreak is not far away. TIGHT SHOT of the alley - Five or six demons and a few vampires are fighting each other. They are distracted by a SUDDEN GUST OF WIND that flings trash around the alley. LIGHT FLASHES as a PORTAL opens near them, and - Illyria appears. The demons pause, exchange a look, and all approach to attack her instead. BLACK OUT. |

EXT. THE ALLEY NORTH OF THE HYPERION - PRE-DAWN Illyria knocks demons and vampires aside like bowling pins without breaking her stride. Two demons attack Illyria, who quickly and efficiently breaks their necks. One by one, the others emerge from the portal - Spike and Angel, then Gunn, and finally, the Shaman, clutching the DRAGON'S STONE. As soon as he steps through, the portal closes up behind them. The Shaman glances back at the wisp of swirling sand where the portal was. Then his hand flies to his chest. His eyes widen and his mouth gapes open as he takes in a ragged breath. He winces with pain. Quickly, he hurries over to Spike's side and grabs THE LIGHTER from Spike's pocket with his free hand. CLOSE-UP - Spike looks down in surprise. What...? Distracted, Spike is punched by a vampire. The Shaman unsuccessfully tries to light the lighter. His chants are weak and punctured with gasps for breath. Finally he flicks on the lighter's flame, but nothing happens. He shakes the lighter, then drops it. He falls to his knees, then to the ground. Gunn stakes a vampire knocked down by Illyria, and Spike stakes two more. Angel beheads the last demon with his sword. The Shaman LIES ON THE STREET, unable to move except for his attempts to force air into his chest. Gunn drops to his side and searches his body for injuries. Gunn speaks to him in Wa!Jani. The Shaman responds very briefly. Angel! The Shaman holds up the dragon's stone and manages to begin the portal-opening spell. The stone briefly GLOWS A FAINT RED as it flickers with power, then it fades to BLACK again. The Shaman utters a few weak words of his incantation; then his arm falls to his side. The rest of the gang surrounds the Shaman. What's wrong? Is he hurt? GUNN He says he can't breathe; he's too weak to move. What's happening to him? (he looks up and around) Is it the air? I could breathe on Fasach just fine. The Shaman opens his mouth to speak. Gunn bends over to listen to the faint words. The Shaman speaks urgently in Wa!Jani, shaking his head. Maybe it's something else, like pollution or radiation. We need to get him some help, maybe take him--somewhere. GUNN (anguished) Where? He's from another world, who's going to be be able to figure out what to do in time? (he frowns) ...And the doctors who could help him don't take orders from us anymore. Illyria, do you know what's happening? ILLYRIA Winifred Burkle has no memories that would be of assistance. Get another wizard to open the portal and return him to his world. ANGEL Yeah, there's got to be some wizards powerful enough to open a portal in LA. GUNN Not anymore. We ran most of them out of the business or out of town. And I doubt Sebassis' followers are eager to do us a favor right now--if we had the time to find them. Angel glances quickly up. The sky is now lighter than when they arrived. We need to get off the street. There were a lot more demons when we left, they could be anywhere. Spike, could you...? Spike picks up the Shaman. They all start walking rapidly down the alley towards the street. Illyria looks at the trashed alley. Your people wallow in their own filth. SPIKE You could use a wash yourself, Blue. Angel, we have to get indoors before we start to flame on. Then we can figure out how to help the Shaman here. ANGLE - The sky has lightened noticeably, although the sun still isn't up. Angel, Spike, and Illyria turn towards the next cross street, and a moment later we hear the sound of a HEAVY TRUCK ENGINE. Gunn turns towards the sound also. OFF SCREEN we hear the truck's doors open and slam shut and booted feet hit the street. Richmond, Green, you're on point. Check every alley for the source of the disturbance. Sunrise is at 6:49. Angel, Spike, Illyria and Gunn turn towards the other end of the alley and start to run to safety. Another truck squeals to an abrupt stop in front of the alley, blocking their escape. EXT. REAR OF HYPERION HOTEL - DAWN The gang retreats to the back of the hotel from the alley. ANGLE - In front of them is the EMPLOYEES' ENTRANCE, flanked by large delivery doors. The door has been spray-painted with graffiti. The four of them melt into the shadowy doorways of the Hyperion delivery entrance. REVERSE ANGLE - The end of the alley, with the truck visible. SIX SOLDIERS DRESSED IN MILITARY CAMOUFLAGE and carrying automatic weapons jump out of an unmarked vehicle. CLOSE-UP - Angel twists the doorknob quietly. We hear the lock snap. He pushes the door open and Spike, Illyria, and Gunn follow him into the hotel. INT. HYPERION HOTEL KITCHEN - DAWN TRACKING SHOT - Angel, Spike, Illyria, and Gunn walk past a row of refrigerators and storeroom doors to the hotel's food preparation tables. Spike lays the Shaman on one of the long tables. He is very still. Can you hear me? Gunn repeats the question in Wa!Jani. CLOSE-UP - The Shaman opens his eyes with difficulty. He whispers to Gunn, who replies to him in Wa!Jani, then in English. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. The Shaman closes his eyes. His breathing stops. His clenched fingers slowly uncurl, and the ebony dragon's stone drops onto the kitchen floor with a small clatter. (grief-stricken) This is all our fault. He never would have died if we hadn't insisted on taking that damned stone. What are the Wa!Jani going to do now? Without the Shaman, they probably won't be able to find their home, much less protect themselves getting to it! (Beat.) We've killed them all. SPIKE Charley, it was his choice. You didn't mean for him to die. GUNN (distraught) I never mean for anyone to die, but I keep killing them just the same. (he looks at the Shaman) He blamed himself; he said he failed his gods and his people. He begged for their forgiveness. ILLYRIA What did you say to him? GUNN I told him he was wrong, and that his faithfulness would be rewarded. ILLYRIA (thoughtfully) You lied. GUNN Maybe. (he looks at her) What would you have done? ANGEL Gunn, we might be next if we don't get out of here. There's nothing you can do for him now. We have to leave him. Gunn looks around the kitchen, sees a TABLECLOTH, and uses it to cover the Shaman's body. He picks up the dragon's stone and stares at it. Maybe we can figure out a way to get it back to the Wa!Jani. TRACKING SHOT - Angel, Spike, Illyria and Gunn quickly make their way through the kitchen and down a service hallway faintly lit with ambient daylight and strewn with trash, to the hotel offices and finally to the lobby. INT. HYPERION HOTEL LOBBY - DAY The Hyperion lobby is empty of furniture and covered with dust and debris. Angel sees notices pasted on the windows of the front office and quickly scans them. CLOSE-UP - The notices are standard orders for demolition. Angel looks grim as he joins the others across the lobby. They exit through the doors that lead to the basement. INT - THE TUNNELS UNDER THE HYPERION - DAY These are the same tunnels our heroes have used to escape from their enemies, or to get around underground, many times. We watch them enter the sewer under the Hyperion and finally stop. They look at each other. The four stand in a tight circle, their voices kept low. CLOSE-UP on ANGEL So who the hell were those guys? Wolfram and Hart black ops? CLOSE-UP on SPIKE (firmly) Government goons. CLOSE-UP on GUNN - Maybe they were vigilantes. CLOSE-UP on ILLYRIA Or mercenaries. Spike breaks ranks and paces the sewer, agitated. I'm telling you, they're a secret paramilitary demon squad! I know that look--the square jaw, the flat head, the huge penis-shaped weapons. I've been burned up, blown up, chopped up, and beaten up more times than I can remember. (Beat.) I can live with that. But I'll be damned if I let them shove another chip up my brain. ANGEL If they were sent by the Senior Partners we've got bigger things to worry about, like the end of the world. Illyria looks around the tunnels. I know this place. It is in the memories of Winifred Burkle. It is unsettling. (abruptly changing the subject) I will kill the humans hunting us and hang their bodies from the streetlamps to warn off any others. ANGEL Not so fast, Illyria. GUNN You can't kill men who might be just protecting the neighborhood. Gunn leans against one of the overhanging pipes, taking advantage of the brief rest. Let's get out of here now. GUNN (grimacing) We're back to running away through the rat-infested tunnels? Haven't we done this before? Suddenly, we hear faint shouts and shots being fired. The Gang turns towards the sounds coming from above. Run away now. Plan later. ANGEL Let's go. (to Gunn) We need to find a place where you can safely rest too. GUNN I can get my own damn self to safety, as soon as we figure out where that is. Angel, Spike, Illyria and Gunn walk dispiritedly down the tunnel. I sense fear and death. ANGEL We're probably not alone down here. There are a lot of people and demons who use the tunnels under L.A. to avoid enemies. And sunlight. SPIKE Where are we going? ANGEL (snaps) I have no idea, Spike. Would you like to lead? SPIKE I'd bloody well do a better job of it. You'll probably lead us straight into Sun Valley. I'm sick of being forced underground. ANGEL Here. The Fang Gang follow Angel down a narrower tunnel, and finally end up at a DEAD END. An old brick wall seals the end of the tunnel. Spike glares at Angel. Brilliant. Scowling, Angel punches the wall, pouring his frustration and anger into the blow. His fist goes straight through it. Shards of brick and mortar explode outward. He and Spike kick a hole big enough for them to pass through. INT. ANOTHER BASEMENT - DAY It is crammed with old school desks, chalkboards, and boxes of books. TRACKING SHOT - The gang threads their way through the room. They find the door to the stairs and continue up to the ground floor of a school. No one is in sight, although posters for various school activities show that the building is, or recently was, in use. They walk past the main office, which has a "Summer School 2004" banner draped above the glass doors. It must be the weekend. They reach the front doors of the school. Illyria throws open the doors. Gunn joins her in the doorway, while Angel and Spike hang back out of direct sunlight. WIDE SHOT - A CITY STREET IN RUINS. Dozens of ABANDONED CARS are scattered haphazardly across the street, as if strewn by a giant child. All have BROKEN WINDOWS, and most are GUTTED BY FIRE. All the shops are nothing but GAPING SHELLS, burned out, their metal frames TWISTED AND BENT. They are empty of merchandise, spilling broken boxes and packing material into the street like disemboweled intestines. The brick walls of some of the buildings are pockmarked with BULLET HOLES. Yellow police tape is stretched across the empty storefronts and office buildings. WEEKS' WORTH OF TRASH is scattered on the streets, as well as PAPER AND BROKEN FURNITURE, obviously tossed out of the SMASHED OFFICE WINDOWS. A shattered copy machine lies on its side, a pool of toner spread around it like blood. Far in the distance, thin plumes of smoke rise slowly in the stagnant air. We're too late. SPIKE Maybe it was an earthquake. GUNN I've seen parts of L.A. look like this before, when I was a kid. But not-- The gang exchange looks with each other, then Angel nods at Illyria and Gunn. Slowly, Illyria and Gunn walk onto the street in front of the school. They see CONCRETE HIGHWAY BARRIERS blocking off side streets. Water flows from a broken hydrant into the storm gutters. Broken walls spill BRICKS AND MORE DEBRIS onto the sidewalk. From far off in the distance, the muted sound of MULTIPLE SIRENS can be heard. Welcome home. CRANE SHOT - The camera pulls up for an aerial view, and we see street after street is ABANDONED AND DESTROYED, BUILDINGS BUCKLING, FIRES SMOLDERING. SMASH CUT - BLACK OUT. |
